To colour with felt pen regularly has the result that the ink does not only appear on paper but also on clothing and furniture. Children are true artists with felt pens. In this tip several options are discussed to remove the felt pen stains from clothing and other locations.

Remove felt pen from clothing

  • The most effective way to remove felt pen stains is by using methylated spirit. Dab the stain with a cloth containing methylated spirit. Let the methylated spirit soak for a few minutes making the ink dissolve. If this has removed most of the ink, the clothing can be washed in the machine. Make really sure most of the ink is removed. Ink will dissolve in the machine too causing the clothing to be affected by it.
  • Felt pen ink usually is alcohol-based. Therefore, alcohol can be used to remove the stain. Drip some alcohol on the stain, let it soak and rub it off with a cloth.
  • Rub some toothpaste on the stain, let it soak for a few minutes and rinse with water.
  • Carefully rub some coffee creamer on the stain and the stain will dissolve.
  • Soak the stain in milk for a couple of minutes. In many cases the stain will dissolve.
  • Spray some lemon juice on the stain and wash it in the machine. The acidic juice extracts the ink from the clothing.

Remove stains from other places than clothing

  • Felt pen stains on windows, tiles or smooth surfaced walls can he removed by spraying hairspray on it and wipe it all off with a damp cloth.
  • Felt pen stains can be removed from furniture by rubbing it with toothpaste.
Note: Not all (wood) furniture can stand this treatment. The best thing is to try first at the bottom of the furniture to see the effect.
  • Felt pen can be removed from wall with a chlorine solution. Chlorine can leave a yellow haze on the wall.
